Community Service Overview
Prior to serving on City Council
Eagle Scout:
If you have been involved with scouting organizations you know that service to the community is one of the key interests of the organization. In order to achieve the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America a substantial community service project must be planned, organized and executed by the candidate. Ken not only achieved this goal; he was recognized by the State House through House Resolution No. 398 for his project.
Old Homestead Subdivision:
Ken has served in several capacities in his local Homeowner’s Association. He has served the Old Homestead Homeowner’s association as its director of Neighborhood Watch and community relations, vice president, maintenance director and multiple years as president.
Eleven Pines Coalition:
When the city council made their plans for the expansion of the San Marino golf course to the larger Farmington Hills golf course, many residents around the project found the original proposal unacceptable. The plan called for trading a large part of taxpayer-owned property to a developer in exchange for 9 extra golf holes. This original proposal would have allowed for the development of over 560 rental apartments, townhouses and owner-occupied condominiums on golf course property. This asked the residents to sacrifice too much. Something needed to be done.
The Eleven Pines coalition was formed as a response to this issue. The coalition was lead by Ken, and representatives from other directly impacted subdivisions. A total of ten subdivisions in the local areas had representation in the coalition. These included Old Homestead, Independence Commons, Independence Hills, Hunt Club, Historic Howard Road, Indian Brook, Saratoga Farms, Pleasant Valley, Trillium, and Oxford Estates. Other concerned residents from around the city joined these homeowners. Each of the groups had their own concerns with the proposal. They organized to oppose the plan presented by the city. That opposition was spear-headed by Ken and several members of the coalition.
Farmington Hills Council of Homeowner’s Association (C.O.H.A.)
Old Homestead was an original member of the COHA. Ken was increasingly involved with the organization, and served as the COHA president in 2002 and subsequently as a trustee. The first objective of COHA is to foster, protect and promote orderly growth, improvement and development of Farmington Hills, in accordance with the goals of COHA, and the planning concepts most beneficial to our home and condominium owners. Working with COHA has allowed Ken to develop a keen sense of the issues that are of particular concern to the home owners of Farmington Hills.
